How far ahead do I need to plan my project?
My general suggestions are to give it more time than you think you are going to need. During the warmer months it can take 1 to 2 weeks just to set up appointments with contractors. It always takes longer than you think. The following are some rough times for planning your project.
|
Roofing, Siding, Windows |
4 to 6 weeks |
Exterior work can get booked up fast in the summer and fall. Winter might be a good time to get on someone's schedule. |
|
Bath Remodeling |
6 to 8 weeks |
Allow time for planning and tweaking of ideas. You will need a permit and drawings. Permits can take up to a month to acquire. |
|
Kitchen Remodeling |
8 to 12 weeks |
There is a lot of planning that goes into a kitchen. It will take time to work out all the small details that go into a well planned kitchen. You will need drawings and permits. It can take 6 to 8 weeks to order most cabinets. |
|
Room Additions |
3 to 6 months |
You will need architectural drawings. This can take from 1 month to 3 months to get final working drawings. Once you have the drawings you will have to get prices from a builder. You will also need permits which can take 2 to 4 weeks. |
|
New Homes |
3 to 9 months |
Custom homes will require all the items in room additions. Planning can take a little longer. |
|
Repairs |
2 to 4 weeks |
If possible give this plenty of time. Most contractors are glad to do this work. |
